Egyptian police shoot dead four Africans near Israeli border
Jun 26, 2011, 8:00 GMT
Rafah, Egypt - Egyptian police shot dead four Africans attempting to cross into Israel illegally, an Egyptian security source said Sunday.
Security forces fired warning shots in the air when they spotted the four people attempting to cross the border late Saturday. The bodies have so far not been identified, the source added.
The deaths comes after 20 Africans, including 15 Sudanese, were arrested on Saturday as they attempted to enter Israel illegally.
Large numbers of migrants regularly try to enter Israel, using Egypt as a transit point in their search for jobs and asylum.
Israel began construction last year of a 240-kilometre barrier along its south-western border with Egypt, mostly aimed at preventing the influx of migrants trying to enter illegally.
