Opposition group launches transitional council in Yemen

Jul 16, 2011, 13:48 GMT

Cairo/Sana'a - A Yemeni opposition group announced on Saturday the creation of an interim ruling council in the strife-torn country amid criticism from the government of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The council was unveiled by the Revolution's Youth Council at a press conference in the Yemeni capital Sana'a that was not attended by representatives of other opposition groups.

The 17-member council comprises former prime minister Haider al-Attas and ex-defence minister Abdullah Eleiwah.

Its was slammed by Yemen's deputy information minister, Abdu al-Gendi, saying it would 'escalate sedition' in the country.

'This council cannot replace the existing government institutions,' he was quoted as saying on the website of the semi-official newspaper September 26.

Since February, millions of Yemenis have been demanding that Saleh step down after 32 years in power.

Saleh has been recovering in a Saudi Arabian hospital after suffering serious wounds during an attack on his palace in early June. There have been conflicting reports about whether he will return to Yemen.
