Israel to host annual international Wikipedia conference
Aug 2, 2011, 13:50 GMT
Haifa - Israel is to host Wikipedia's annual international conference in the northern port city of Haifa on Thursday, despite calls for a boycott from a number of Palestinian groups.
Some 650 people including editors of the online encyclopedia from 56 countries are scheduled to attend the three-day event, which includes workshops and debates about information sharing.
'We're really excited to host so many people from all over the world in Haifa this year,' Tomer Ashur, the Israel chairman of Wikimedia, said in a statement Tuesday.
The conference, known as Wikimania, is the seventh annual gathering and comes as the popular online encyclopaedia, sometimes questioned over its reliability, marks its 10th anniversary.
Last year the gathering was held in Poland, and next year's is scheduled to take place in Washington.
