Report: Egyptian wife files for divorce over charity meal
Aug 17, 2011, 10:39 GMT
Cairo - An Egyptian university professor has filed for divorce because her Muslim husband was spotted breaking his fast at a street charity banquet, an act she regarded as beneath his station, the independent newspaper Al Masry Al Youm reported Wednesday.
The wife told the court she married her husband years ago against her wealthy family's will, as he was socially beneath her class, according to the paper.
The man, who is also a university professor, was seen taking his fast-breaking meal at one of the street charity banquets traditionally organized in Egypt in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
'This is by no means appropriate behaviour from a university professor,' the paper quoted the wife as telling the court.
The court has yet to decide on the woman's request for divorce.
Although hosted in areas of all social classes in Egypt, free meals are usually offered to the poor or to those who cannot be at home for the fast-breaking meal in the month of Ramadan.
Muslims have to refrain from eating, drinking and having sex from dawn to dusk during Ramadan.
