Clashes in southern Yemen kill 8 soldiers, 17 militants
Sep 7, 2011, 23:40 GMT
Cairo(dpa)- Eight Yemeni soldiers and 17 al-Qaeda-linked militants were killed Wednesday in clashes between the two sides in southern Yemen, broadcaster Al Jazeera reported.
The clashes raged in Abyan province, where al-Qaeda-affiliated militants have taken advantage of Yemen's crisis, which erupted in February, and occupied several towns in the area, Al Jazeera said.
In recent weeks, the Yemeni government, backed by US airstrikes, have mounted their attacks on militants in southern Yemen.
Pro-democracy protesters in Yemen have been rallying since February for the ouster of President Ali Abdlalah Saleh, who has ruled Yemen for 33 years.
