Yemenis rally to denounce "collective punishment"

Sep 14, 2011, 14:12 GMT

Sana'a- Thousands of Yemenis rallied Wednesday in the eastern province of Hudeidah to denounce what they described as the government's policy of 'collective punishment' by cutting electricity supplies.

The demonstrators threatened to escalate action to unseat the government of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, witnesses told the German Press Agency dpa from Hudeidah without elaborating.

Activists in Hudeidah also called for bringing to justice government forces whom they accused of using live ammunition against protesters, the witnesses added.

A mass anti-government protest was also held Wednesday in Taiz, Yemen's second-largest city and a flashpoint for an uprising against Saleh.

Since February, millions of Yemenis have been taking to the streets demanding the ouster of Saleh, who has been in power for 32 years.

At least 400 people have been killed and thousands injured in the government crackdowns on protesters over the past seven months, according to local pro-democracy activists.
