Hezbollah condemns Iraq's Shiite Shrine blasts
Sep 26, 2011, 8:56 GMT
Beirut - The pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite movement condemned Monday the blasts that hit the Iraqi shrine of Karbala a day earlier describing it as an attack that serves US interests in the region.
'This crime is in the interest of the American occupation and its collaborators who are deploying efforts to stay in Iraq,' a statement by the group said.
'The terrorist hands have not stopped targeting the peaceful people of Iraq, killing their children and women and destroying their property in various regions especially holy regions such as the city of Karbala,' it added.
Multiple blasts at a passport and identity card office in the Iraqi Shiite shrine city of Karbala killed a total of 22 people on Sunday.
The attacks, for which no one claimed responsibility, prompted the authorities to close the city's entrances for fear of more assaults.
Karbala is a holy city for Muslim Shiites visited by hundreds of pilgrims daily.
