Security around UN HQ in Beirut tightened
Oct 3, 2011, 9:50 GMT
Beirut- Security measures have been tightened around the United Nations headquarters in Beirut to avert any possible terrorist attack, a Lebanese security source told the German press Agency dpa Monday.
'The Lebanese authorities have received information that a possible terrorist attack might target the premises of the UN building in Beirut,' he said, on conditition of anonymity.
Lebanon's Interior Minister Marwan Charbel was quoted by Lebanese media as saying that there are fears among the UN officials that an attack similar to one that took place in August at the UN headquarters in the Nigerian capital Abuja, would happen in Beirut.
On August 26, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives outside the UN building in Abuja, leaving 18 people dead.
UN officials have refused to comment on the recent security measures around their premises.
