China, Russia veto EU resolution on Syria
Oct 4, 2011, 22:56 GMT
New York - China and Russia late Tuesday vetoed a European Union-backed resolution in which the United Nations would have called for the Syrian government to respect the human rights of pro-democracy protesters.
Nine of the 15 UN Security Council members voted in favour, but the vetoes by the two permanent members killed the resolution.
French Ambassador Gerard Araud said the vetoes were politically motivated.
'The veto will not stop us from demanding human rights for people,' Araud said.
The defeated resolution was introduced by Britain, Germany, France and Portugal, the four EU members in the council.
