Report: Egypt's finance minister reverses resignation
Oct 12, 2011, 12:00 GMT
Cairo - Egyptian Finance Minister Hazem al-Beblawi attended a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, a day after the country's military rulers refused to accept his resignation, the semi-official newspaper Al Ahram rported online.
Al-Beblawi had resigned on Tuesday in protest at the government's handling of clashes between mostly Christian protesters and army troops in Cairo in which 26 people were killed.
'My resignation was prompted by political reasons, and was not due to the current economic situation in Egypt,' al-Bablawi, a noted economic expert, told a private television station Tuesday night.
His move was the first by a high-level government official following Sunday's clashes, which also left around 300 injured.
Al-Beblawi, who is also the deputy minister for economic affairs, was appointed by the ruling military council in July following mass protests against the former minister, Samir Radwan.
