US, Iran send complaints to UN on alleged plot against Saudi envoy
Oct 13, 2011, 17:49 GMT
New York - The United States has complained to the UN, and Iran countered with a protest note, about the alleged direct involvement by Iran in an assassination plot against the Saudi envoy to Washington, a UN spokesman said Thursday.
The two countries sent letters to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who forwarded them to both the UN Security Council and General Assembly, said Martin Nesirky.
The US letter was not made public. But Iran's mission to the UN said Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee expressed 'outrage' at the US accusation about the alleged plot.
'The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly and categorically rejects these fabricated and baseless allegations, based on the suspicious claims by an individual,' Khazaee said.
'Any country could accuse other countries through fabrication of such stories. However, this would set dangerous precedents in the relations among states.'
Khazaee said Washington was 'politically motivated' in moving against Iran because of 'its long-standing animosity towards the Iranian nation.'
