Fired up by dress code discipline, Israel pupils torch classrooms
Nov 17, 2011, 11:29 GMT
Tel Aviv - Living the fantasy of disgruntled school pupils the world over, four teenage schoolgirls torched two classrooms in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba to protest the school's dress code.
The four 11th graders were arrested and then confessed to their act before being released on house arrest, police spokesman Tamir Avtavi told dpa on Thursday. He did not say when the incident took place.
He said no one was injured when the girls set the classrooms alight, but thousands of shekels worth of damage was caused.
The girls were angry at the discipline imposed by their new principal, who enforced a strict dress code which, among other things, bans the wearing of flip-flops.
Israeli school pupils have had a uniform dress code for the past two years. Usually, it is a T-shirt or a sweat shirt with the emblem of the school emblazoned on it.
Older pupils are also urged not to dress provocatively.
