Iranian diplomats leave Britain after row over embassy attack
Dec 2, 2011, 15:25 GMT
London - Iranian diplomats Friday left their London postings after Britain ordered the closure of their embassy in the wake of an assault by demonstrators upon the British embassy in Tehran earlier this week.
Officials were seen loading boxes into removal vans at the embassy in west London. Diplomats and Iranian embassy staff were later due to take a charter flight to Tehran.
Foreign Secretary William Hague Wednesday ordered the diplomats to leave Britain within 48 hours, following the closure of Britain's embassy in Tehran, which was stormed and ransacked by protesters Tuesday.
Hague said the expulsion of the Iranian diplomats did not amount to a total severing of ties, but reduced relations between the two countries to the 'lowest level consistent with the maintenance of diplomatic relations.'
