Authorities bust Guatemala-to-Jordan sex-trafficking ring
Dec 7, 2011, 23:59 GMT
Guatemala City - Guatemalan authorities on Wednesday arrested four members of a sex trafficking ring that forced women the Central American country into prostitution in Jordan, Guatemalan Interior Minister Carlos Menocal said.
He announced the capture of two Guatemalans and two Jordanians, describing the four suspects as leaders of the scheme.
Menocal said the women were lured with false offers of 400-dollar-a-month jobs as domestics, childcare workers or secretaries in the Palestinian Territories. Instead, they were sold into sex slavery.
The investigation was sparked by reports filed with Guatemalan prosecutors by three Guatemalan women who escaped from Jordan.
Since June, 11 Guatemalan women sold into sex slavery in Jordan have been repatriated, Guatemalan authorities said.
