LEAD: Explosion wounds French peacekeepers in southern Lebanon
Dec 9, 2011, 9:03 GMT
Beirut- Five French soldiers, serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and two Lebanese civilians were wounded Friday when a roadside bomb targeted their convoy in southern Lebanon, UN and Lebanese security sources told dpa.
The roadside bomb attack took place near the Palestinian refugee camp of Burj al Shamali, east of the southern port city of Tyre.
'According to preliminary reports, at around 9:40 today (0740 GMT) an explosion targeted a UNIFIL convoy along the highway in Tyre,' a UN source said.
'Five UNIFIL peacekeepers and two Lebanese civilians, who were passing by, were injured,' the source added.
On July 26, a French convoy was targeted in a similar explosion near the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh, east of the southern port city of Sidon.
Reports in recent months have indicated that the Palestinian refugee camps in southern Lebanon are becoming a hub for Muslim extremists loyal to the terrorist group al-Qaeda. There are 12 Palestinian camps scattered across Lebanon.
