Jordan seizes huge amounts of narcotics in battle with smugglers
Dec 21, 2011, 13:59 GMT
Amman - Jordanian anti-narcotics personnel on Wednesday seized a 'huge amount' of drugs during an armed engagement with seven smugglers near the border with Syria, officials said.
The confiscated narcotics included 44 kilograms of heroin, 120 kilograms of hashish and more than 1 million pills of Captagon, a synthetic drug popular in the Arab world.
Acting on a tip, police ambushed the smugglers at dawn.
'The seven smugglers managed to flee leaving behind a huge quantity of drugs which they intended to store in Jordan before moving it to a neighbouring country,' said Public Security Directorate spokesman Mohammad Khatib.
Jordan is frequently used by drug gangsters as a transit country for smuggling narcotics to Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich Gulf states.
