Jordan military tribunal releases 12 Salafist detainees on bail
Jan 5, 2012, 15:39 GMT
Amman - A Jordanian military court on Thursday released on bail 12 hard-line Islamists, known as Salafists, arrested during pro-reform demonstrations eight months ago, judicial sources said.
But the State Security Court refused to release three prominent Salafist leaders, including Mohammad Tahawi, currently in hospital after undergoing surgery, according to the group's lawyer Musa Abdullat.
The freed detainees were among 103 Salafist demonstrators who were arrested in April on charges of stabbing scores of policemen during clashes in the city of Zarqa, 25 kilometres east of Amman.
Including those released today, the court has so far released on bail 93 of the Salafists but is still holding 10 pending trial on charges of 'plotting to carry out acts of terrorism, inciting regional and sectarian dissent and rioting.'
At least 47 Salafists charged with taking part in the April clashes with police are still at large and are being hunted by the security authorities, judicial sources said.
