Syrian forces raid area near Damascus
Jan 26, 2012, 10:28 GMT
Beirut - Syrian security forces stormed Thursday a restive area on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, killing at least two people, activists based in northern Lebanon told dpa.
'Sounds of heavy explosions and machine guns are rocking the area of Douma. But ambulances are being prevented from entering the area,' said Ahmed al-Hamawi, a Syrian activist.
He added that at least eight people, including two women, were injured in the attack.
Government forces have been carrying out major crackdowns across Syria, including the central provinces of Hama and Homs, since Tuesday.
At lest 26 people, including a Christian clergyman and the secretary general of the Syrian Red Crescent in the province of Idlib, were killed in a government clampdown on Wednesday, the opposition said.
More than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria since the pro-democracy uprising erupted in March, according to UN estimates.
