Arab League summit set for March 29 in Baghdad
Feb 1, 2012, 12:54 GMT
Baghdad - The Arab League said on Wednesday its annual summit is to be held on March 29 in Baghdad, the first such conference to be held in Iraq since 1990.
The summit 'will be preceded by a preparatory meeting of Arab foreign ministers on March 28,' Ahmed bin Heli, the deputy chief of the pan-Arab organization, told reporters in Baghdad.
Arab economy ministers would meet in Baghdad on March 27, he said.
In May, the Arab League was forced to postpone its annual conference in Baghdad due to turmoil in several Arab countries.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, meanwhile, said his government was 'serious' about providing maximum security for the Arab leaders attending the conference.
The summit was expected to focus on the situation in Iraq, which has experienced a surge in deadly attacks since the United States completed its withdrawal from the country following nine years of military intervention.
More than 320 people have been killed in the violence across Iraq since the start of the year, according to government figures.
