Ex-parliamentarian arrested in Jordan for anti-government activity
Feb 2, 2012, 19:34 GMT
Amman - The Jordanian security authorities on Thursday arrested former member of the lower house of parliament, Ahmad Abbadi, the official Petra news agency reported.
Abbadi, a controversial opposition politician, was being interrogated by the public prosecutor of the State Security Court, Petra said.
The agency did not give further details regarding the charges directed at Abbadi, but local media reports said that the former lawmaker had made a statement calling for turning the country's monarchy into a republic.
His arrest came a few hours before he was scheduled to address a meeting of his followers on Friday.
There have been almost weekly demonstrations in Jordan in the past 12 months to push forward the demand for political reforms, but none of the protests called for changing the regime.
