Shelling stops, sniper fire continues in Homs, activists say
Feb 4, 2012, 8:53 GMT
Beirut - Syrian army shelling of residential areas in the central province of Homs eased on Saturday, though sniper fire continued, a spokesman for the Syrian opposition Local Coordination Committees (LCC) told dpa.
'More than 350 mortar shells fell on the neighbourhood of Khalidiyeh, focusing on an area called al-Olwa Gardens where anti-regime protesters usually gather,' Omar Idlibi said.
'One building that houses 18 apartments was totally destroyed and the another two were heavily damaged,' he said.
Idlibi stressed that the death toll, so far put at 260, is expected to rise since more than 1,050 people had been wounded, among them dozens of children and women.
