Double veto of Syria resolution a "betrayal" of protesters
Feb 4, 2012, 18:56 GMT
New York - Russia and China's decision to veto a draft UN Security Council resolution on Syria was a 'shockingly callous betrayal' of the Syrian people, Amnesty International said Saturday.
'This is a completely irresponsible use of the veto by Russia and China,' said Salil Shetty, Amnesty's secretary general. 'After a night in which the whole world watched the people of Homs suffering, the actions of these members are particularly shocking.'
The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said, 'Today, after weeks of Russian diplomatic games-playing and in the middle of a bloodbath in Homs, they (vetoes) are simply incendiary ... the risk is high that the (al-)Assad regime will see this double veto as a green light for even more violence.'
HRW accused Russia of 'unapologetically arming a government that is killing its own people (and) also providing it with diplomatic cover.'
