Damascus - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday started discussions on the ongoing unrest, at the presidential palace in Damascus, state television reported.
'It is in our interests that the Arab peoples live in peace and agreement. Every leader in every country should recognize his own responsibility. You recognize it,' Lavrov told al-Assad before the meeting, according to the Interfax news agency.
The talks are to also include al-Assad's political and security advisers, a source close to the government told dpa.
The source said that the authorities had prepared a file, reportedly backed by documents and pictures, to show Lavrov 'that there are terrorist gangs terrorizing the people of Syria.'
