UN official calls for action to halt violence in Syria
Feb 8, 2012, 12:58 GMT
Beirut - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday called for immediate action to halt an escalation of violence in Syria.
There is an 'extreme urgency for the international community to cut through the politics and take effective action to protect the Syrian population,' Pillay said in a statement.
'I am appalled by the Syrian government's wilful assault on Homs, and its use of artillery and other heavy weaponry in what appears to be indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas in the city,' she said.
