US calls for restraint ahead of Bahrain protests anniversary
Feb 9, 2012, 19:18 GMT
Manama - The United States on Thursday urged the Bahraini government and pro-reform protesters to exercise restrain ahead of next week's first anniversary of the demonstrations that broke-out on February 14 last year.
'The days and weeks surrounding the anniversary are a moment for all Bahrainis in all segments of society to come together to move beyond the pain of last year and begin to forge a more peaceful, prosperous future through genuine dialogue,' Michael Posner, US assistant secretary of state told reporters in Manama.
According to the opposition, more then 60 people have been killed since the protests broke-out.
Protesters have called for an attempt to return to Lulu Roundabout, the focus of last year's protests. The area was closed in March and remains under the control of security forces.
Posner on Thursday expressed concern over recent violent street protests, whilst also calling on the government to release political prisoners and halt trials of people who face charges related to their political views.
'We condemn the violent street actions that have escalated in recent months,' he said.
'At the same time, we continue to receive credible reports of excessive force by police, including widespread and sometimes indiscriminate use of tear gas,' Posner continued.
