Internet access in Iran limited in last 72 hours

Tehran - Access to the internet in Iran has been limited for the last 72 hours, the Mehr news agency reported Saturday.
While it was possible to receive information, there was no way of sending messages, especially not via email through Google, Hotmail and Yahoo since Thursday.
Officials have so far refrained from acknowledging the problem, let alone explain about reasons, Mehr reported.
There was speculation that the internet curbs were because of planned protests by the opposition on Tuesday, and part of the administration's efforts to prevent any coordination online.
Iran has in the past limited internet access during protests and even cut the text messaging services of mobile phone providers.
One of the main sites used during protests is Facebook which is reportedly used, although blocked by the government, by more than 17 million Iranians.
More than 5 million websites are reportedly blocked in Iran but Iranians use proxy software and virtual private networks to access them.
