Clashes in Bahrain on first anniversary of anti-government protests
Feb 14, 2012, 10:52 GMT
Manama - Clashes erupted Tuesday in the Bahraini capital Manama as police forces used tear gas to disperse protesters who were marking the first anniversary of the start of anti-government demonstrations, witnesses said.
Several protesters were detained and others injured in the intermittent clashes that began on Monday.
But the Interior Ministry said that life was normal and the kingdom's streets were safe, according to the state news agency BNA.
On Monday, security managed to disperse thousands of protesters who tried to march towards Pearl Square, the epicentre of last year's Shiite-led protests against the kingdom's Sunni Muslim rulers. The square has been closed by security forces since March 2011.
The death toll from nearly a year of protests stands at 60, according to opposition groups.
