Four killed in violence in Syrian province of Daraa, says watchdog
Feb 16, 2012, 8:10 GMT
Cairo - At least four people were killed Thursday in renewed violence in the southern Syrian province of Daraa, reported an opposition watchdog.
One local man was killed when government forces fired randomly during a crackdown on the dissident province, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Three security personnel were, meanwhile, killed in clashes with army defectors in Daraa, added the observatory.
The violence came hours before the United Nations General Assembly was due to meet to vote on a Saudi Arabia-led draft resolution condemning the bloodshed in Syria and calling for a political transition to democracy in the country.
The draft contains language that is similar to the UN Security Council resolution that was vetoed by Russia and China on February 4.
