Syrian troops pound opposition strongholds, say activists
Feb 23, 2012, 7:44 GMT
Beirut - Syrian government forces Thursday bombarded opposition strongholds in the central province of Homs, activists said.
'Dozens of mortar shells rained on the Homs neighbourhoods of Inshaat, Karam al- Zeitoun and Baba Amr,' Omar Homsi, a Syrian activist in the province, told dpa by satellite phone.
The heavy shelling came a day after two Western journalists were killed in Baba Amr.
The opposition Local Coordination committees (LCC), which documents violence across Syria, said that the deaths caused by government forces on Wednesday reached 97, including 60 in Homs.
Rima Fleihan, the LCC spokeswoman in Jordan, Thursday called for collective acts of civil disobedience across Syria to show support for the besieged Homs.
Dubbed as 'capital of the Syrian revolution', Homs has been the target of sustained government bombardment for three weeks now, according to the opposition.
