The naming ceremony took place 100 days after the cub's birth, following Chinese tradition. The panda's mother, Bai Yun, is on loan to the zoo from China.
The name was chosen by by more than 70,000 voters on the zoo's website. Other proposals included Jiao Mei, 'sweet and charming'; Jiao Yan, 'delicate and charming'; Bao Bei, 'precious, priceless, a treasure'; and Zhong Da, 'great, important, significant'.
With four pandas and the new cub, the San Diego Zoo boasts the largest population outside China. All of the animals are on loan from China.
