The volcano, located about 60 kilometres southwest of Guatemala City, spewed ash into the air Tuesday, prompting authorities to send a team to the region.
The ash created a dark cloud that extended 1,700 metres into the atmosphere.
Volcano specialists said the activity was not unusual and that similar rumblings had been heard for years.
