Thirteen dead after wedding bus plunges into Bangladesh river
Apr 22, 2006, 14:25 GMT
Dhaka - At least 13 people were killed when a bus transporting a bridal party overshot a waiting ferry and plunged into a river running in spate in central Bangladesh, rescue workers and police said Saturday.
Twenty-two people were still missing following Friday evening's accident, in which the bus driver lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the road past a ferry that crosses the Chitra river in Narail district, 250 kilometres west of Dhaka.
The bride was among the missing passengers, police said, while the groom was among 15 people who had been rescued from the river and were undergoing treatment in hospital, according to witnesses.
Local officials confirmed the recovery of 13 bodies from the river and said they feared more bodies were trapped inside the sunken bus, which was carrying about 50 people, including several children, at the time of the accident.
