Huge power cut causes chaos across Pakistan
Sep 24, 2006, 19:27 GMT
Islamabad - A massive power cut caused turmoil across Pakistan on Sunday prompting panic buying in some cities and spawning rumours of a coup against President Pervez Musharraf who is currently in the United States.
However, as power was gradually restored, calm began to return to the major cities.
Officials said maintenance work on one of the three transmission lines overloaded the other two lines causing a cascading breakdown of distribution of power from the major Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha hydel power projects in northern Pakistan.
It was the worst power crisis in the country's history and came at a time when the Muslim nation was preparing for the fasting month of Ramadan which begins in Pakistan on Monday. The government has ordered an inquiry into the causes of the power cut.
