Oct 28, 2006, 9:32 GMT
Islamabad - Seventeen persons died in central Pakistani city of Multan after consuming poisonous liquor during the three-day celebrations of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, media reports said.
Punjab Health Minister Tahir Ali Javed told the private Geo TV that four persons were pronounced dead on arrival at Nishtar Hospital in Multan, while 13 others died during treatment. In all, 75 people were brought to the hospital for treatment, he said.
Nishtar Hospital's emergency ward director Fahim Javed said the death toll might increase as most of the survivors were in a precarious condition.
District Police Officer Munir Chishti, in a press conference, said the police had conducted raids and arrested five bootleggers and seized 120 bottles of locally made liquor.
