Colombo - The US and Italian ambassadors to Sri Lanka were injured Tuesday in a mortar attack on an air field in eastern Sri Lanka, Minister of Human Rights and Natural Disaster Management Mahinda Samarasinghe said.
The extent of the injuries to Robert Blake and Prio Marini were not released. At least 10 others, including an UN official attached to the Colombo office, were also injured in the attack.
The attack took place at 9 a.m. in the air field at Batticaloa, 240 kilometres east of the capital, as two helicopters carrying dignitaries landed.
The ambassadors were in the east to visit development projects funded by the US and was being accompanied by government officials, said Samarasinghe.
Samarasinghe was at the scene but was not injured in the attack.
Military officials blamed rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attack.
