At least 25 killed in road accident in southern Sri Lanka (1st Lead)
Apr 10, 2007, 8:27 GMT
Colombo - At least 25 people were killed and more than 50 injured Tuesday in a head-on collusion between a passenger bus and a lorry in southern Sri Lanka, police said.
A fire broke out soon after the collision in Kosgoda, 80 kilometres south of Colombo, and some of the bus passengers burned to death.
The lorry was carrying beer for the upcoming traditional New Year celebrations on Friday and Saturday.
Hospital sources said that the death toll could increase because at least five of the injured were in critical condition.
The accident was the worst since last year when 50 passengers were killed when their bus crashed into a train at a crossing.
Last year, 2,100 people were killed in road accidents in Sri Lanka. According to police, the number of accidents have increased in recent months despite increased penalties for traffic offences.
