One soldier killed, five injured in ambush in Pakistan
May 17, 2007, 13:47 GMT
Islamabad - One Pakistani security forces officer died and five more were injured Thursday in a mine explosion followed by an ambush in the southwestern Balochistan province, local media reported.
Suspected militants opened fire upon security personnel after the blast disabled their vehicle in the Kahan region located 200 kilometres southeast of Quetta, the private Aaj television said.
Tribal insurgents who demand political autonomy and a greater share in Balochistan's natural resources are waging a guerrilla campaign against government forces, official buildings and power lines in the province.
During a recent visit to the province, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf offered the militants a chance to surrender now or face annihilation.
