Al-Qaeda re-emerging in Pakistan, US intelligence says
Jul 17, 2007, 16:11 GMT
Washington - The al-Qaeda terrorist network has been regenerating its ability to carry out attacks on US soil by finding refuge in a remote region of Pakistan, a US intelligence report released Tuesday said.
Al-Qaeda's top operatives and leadership have found safe-haven in Pakistan's frontier areas near the border with Afghanistan, a region referred to as the Pakistan Federally Administered Tribal Areas, where the government exercises little control, the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) said.
'We will continue to press (the Pakistanis) to take action to ensure that no part of Pakistan remains a safe haven for terrorists,' said Fran Townsend, US President George W Bush's homeland security adviser.
The NIE also warned that al-Qaeda will likely leverage its presence in Iraq to mount attacks on US territory as Bush scrambles to halt dwindling support for the war in Iraq.
Al-Qaeda has been suspected of being behind unsuccessful assassination attempts on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a close US ally in the war on terrorism whose government is trying to fend off a surge of Islamic extremism.
The United States has along suspected the al-Qaeda and Taliban militants regularly carry out attack on US and NATO troops in Afghanistan before scurrying back into the mountainous region of Pakistan.
