Dutch couple arrested over alleged illegal adoption
Jul 27, 2007, 12:51 GMT
Amsterdam - A Dutch couple have been arrested in Sri Lanka on charges of trying to adopt a two-week old baby illegally.
Legal officials in Colombo told reporters on Friday the couple appeared before a Sri lankan judge the previous day. A second hearing was to take place on August 3.
The couple allegedly were prepared to pay a large sum to complete the adoption, and had intended to smuggle the child from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands, police were reported as saying.
Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are both parties to the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in respect of Inter-Country Adoption.
