Dutch couple arrested over alleged illegal adoption (2nd Roundup)

Amsterdam - A Dutch couple have been arrested in Sri Lanka on charges of trying to adopt a two-week old baby illegally. Legal officials in Colombo told reporters on Friday the couple appeared before a Sri lankan judge the previous day. A second hearing was to take place on August 3. The couple allegedly were prepared to pay a large sum to complete the adoption, and had intended to smuggle the child from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands, police were reported as saying. Rob Dekker, spokesman for the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the report, adding that the couple were in contact with the Dutch embassy's consulair department in Colombo. He declined further details, citing 'the couple's privacy'. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are both parties to the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in respect of Inter-Country Adoption. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
