Dutch couple suspected of illegal adoption remains in custody
Aug 3, 2007, 7:35 GMT
Amsterdam - A judge in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has ordered the detention of a Dutch couple suspected of trying to adopted a baby illegally to be extended for another two weeks, reports said Friday in Amsterdam.
The court said the extension until August 16 was necessary to enable the police to investigate the charges. The couple was arrested July 27 on charges of trying to adopt a two-week old baby illegally.
Colombo police officials said the couple allegedly were prepared to pay a large sum to complete the adoption, and had intended to smuggle the child from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands.
The couple is in contact with the Dutch embassy in Colombo. Rob Dekker, spokesman for the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, declined further details, citing 'the couple's privacy.'
Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are both parties to the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in respect of Inter-Country Adoption.
