Aug 13, 2007, 8:03 GMT
Kathmandu - At least eight people were confirmed dead and two others missing in flash floods and landslides in western Nepal caused by renewed heavy monsoon rains, officials media reported Monday.
The state-owned Radio Nepal said six people of the same family were killed when their home was buried by a landslide in Baitadi district, 420 kilometres west of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, on Sunday night
The report quoted police as saying a rescue operation was hampered by continuing heavy rains in the area.
Separately, official Nepal Television said two more people were killed when they were swept away by a flooded river in Kailali district while two people went missing in landslides in Darchula district bordering India in west Nepal.
Western Nepal has once again been hit by heavy monsoon rains since Sunday, exasperating the already critical situation in the region hit by flooding two weeks ago.
In late July, western Nepal bore the burnt of one the worst floods to hit Nepal in several years, displacing over 200,000 people in the region.
The latest deaths bring the total number of people killed in flash floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains since June to at least 103.
