First Polish soldier dies in Afghanistan
Aug 14, 2007, 16:43 GMT
Warsaw - Poland suffered its first casualty in a dangerous stabilisation mission in Afghanistan Tuesday when a Polish troop patrol came under fire from unknown assailants, Poland's TVN24 news channel reported.
Lukasz Kurowski, 28, died while being airlifted to a field hospital by helicopter from the site of the attack near Gardez, south-east Afghanistan.
Kurowski arrived in Afghanistan in September 2006 and was one of some 1,200 Polish troops stationed there as part of part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
A recent opinion survey showed nearly 80 per cent of Poles oppose the deployment of Polish troops in Afghanistan.
Public opposition to the presence of some 900 Polish troops in the US-led multinational forces in Iraq also remains strong at 81 per cent, according to a recent survey.
