Rocket attack hits German base in north-eastern Afghanistan
Sep 22, 2007, 6:20 GMT
Kabul - The Taliban say they fired two rockets at a German military base in the north-eastern Afghan province of Badakhshan on Friday night.
Local police have confirmed the rocket attack, but said it caused no casualties.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said their fighters had launched two rockets at a 'centre of German forces' in Badakshan province last night.
'Two rockets were fired at the German troops' base in Fiazabad airport, but we don't know about casualties yet,' Mujahid told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The chief of the crime investigation branch of the provincial police, Fazl Ahmad Nazari, told dpa the rocket hit an area not very close to the German base and therefore caused no harm to the soldiers based there.
A Public Information Officer with the German Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kunduz said they had no report of such an attack on their base last night.
There have been frequent rocket attacks on German military bases in northern Afghanistan in recent months, but they have rarely caused casualties or serious damage.
Just a week ago, two rockets were fired at the German military base in Kunduz city without causing any casualties.
