Four killed, thousands affected in Nepal flooding
Sep 30, 2007, 4:44 GMT
Kathmandu - At least four people were killed and thousands of others affected by flooding across western Nepal, news reports and officials said Sunday.
Officials said the worst-affected areas were in the western part of the country where at least three people died on Saturday.
Police said dozens of villages were submerged after three days of continuous monsoon rains flooded many places in Banke district, about 400 kilometres west of the capital Kathmandu.
The area was recovering from floods in July and August that killed scores of people and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.
Another person died in Nawalparasi district, about 250 kilometres south-west of Kathmandu, news reports said.
The country's meteorological department said Nepalgunj town and surrounding areas in Banke district had received as much as 250 millimetres of rainfall since Thursday evening.
It also said monsoon season, which was expected to end by the third week of September, was still active and expected to remain so for another two weeks.
The latest deaths brought the monsoon death toll to more than 150 for the year.
