Britain welcomes "necessary steps" taken by Musharraf
Nov 29, 2007, 20:42 GMT
London - The British government Thursday welcomed the announcement by Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf that he would lift the state of emergency as a 'necessary step.'
Foreign Secretary David Miliband said in a statement: 'I welcome President Musharraf's announcement that the state of emergency will be lifted on 16 December, and Pakistan's constitution restored.'
Miliband said Britain was looking forward to the end of the emergency decree and all remaining restrictions being lifted ahead of parliamentary elections set for January.
'Both these steps are necessary so that all parties can participate fully and so that free and fair elections can take place,' he said.
