Dec 31, 2007, 11:00 GMT
New Delhi - At least three separatist rebels were killed and another injured in combat with the Indian army in the north-eastern state of Assam on Monday, local media reported.
Government troops launched an operation in the jungle of Tinsukia district, more than 400 kilometres east of state capital Guwahati, the Press Trust of India reported quoting defence sources.
Rebels from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) attacked a perimeter set up by the platoon Monday morning. Three militants were killed in the clash, while the rest managed to escape along with one wounded comrade, the report said.
The ULFA is a leading militant group in Assam that has been fighting for an independent homeland since 1979. More than 20,000 people have been killed in the violent separatist movement in the state during the past three decades.
