Advisor to Tamil minister shot dead in northern Sri Lanka
May 13, 2008, 16:16 GMT
Colombo - Unidentified gunmen shot dead Tuesday an advisor to a minority Tamil cabinet minister at her residence in northern Sri Lanka, police said.
The advisor Maheshwari Velauthan, was at her residence in Karaveddi, Jaffna, and was shot by three men dressed in military type uniforms.
Velauthan had served as a human rights activist as well as advisor to Minister Douglas Devananda, who heads the Tamil minority party - the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP).
Velauthan had come under threat from the LTTE while Minister Devananda has already escaped three attempts on his life.
Police said they believe that Tamil rebels, who infiltrated the government controlled area in Jaffna, had posed as security personnel and shot her.
A spokesman for the EPDP also said they believed that the LTTE was responsible for the killing.
The EPDP has backed the security forces in their military campaign against the rebels and also a partner in the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government.

Sad day for Tamils, All the Tamils are in endanger, until someone terminate this sad killing machine (self style national leader).
My puzzle is about decision making of those leaders of alternative Tamil political groups. They are continually failing to protect their members from killer machine LTTE. It is leader’s responsibility to formulate and identifying process to protect their members from LTTE, as a leader of party and if you are run out of ideas, please resign from your post and take break from leadership and give the leadership to someone who could do something- different to grow the party and protect members.
Anyone can easily understand the VP’s killing pattern, If there is a dull period and he cannot make any offensive again SLA , he will kick start his killing machine against other moderated Tamil party’s or their Tamils who openly opposed to his ideology .
Killers (pistol gangs) will be active for a while and he will rotate the killings to area to area then stop it for while to fool the international community, Rights groups, Tamils and leaders of the parties. And start again the same pattern , as you can see from last few weeks , in Jaffna there was number deaths of un identify killings by LTTE killers, then in Trincomalee , Batticallo (TMVP members) , Vavunia PLOTE member , now again in Jaffna EPDP member.
All the members of Tamils parties got be proactive all time against LTTE, Sometime diamond cut diamond.
If VP hadn't borne for a Tamil mother, Now Tamils would have librated them self from all the oppressions.
EPDP is a paramilitary group.
This lady was the'keep' of paramilitary group leader / warlord Dougles Devananda.
Devananda has been a warlord for more than three decades. During that time he has used and killed many women. Maheshwari is just another number on Devananda's list.

EPDP is not a political party and there are no 'ministers' in it. Number of gimmicks in Sri lanka is unbelievable. Only foreign, gullible countries fail to see this. EPDP is one of the 'white van' abductors 'enforcers' of disappearances in this wretched island. Wake up world!
