Sri Lanka flood toll: 11 dead, 165,000 displaced
Jun 2, 2008, 12:05 GMT
Colombo - At least 11 people were killed and more than 165,000 displaced as floods swept through the central and western parts of the country during the past three days, disaster agency officials said Monday.
Eight of the deaths were reported from the Kalutara district, 40 kilometres south of the capital while the central Ratnapura and the western districts of Colombo and Gampaha were affected, they said.
The air force and navy were called to carry out rescue operations in the Kalutara district where some people remain trapped without food.
Meteorological department officials said the heavy rains were due to the north-east monsoon rains that are expected to continue during the next few days.
