Taliban driven from two districts in eastern Afghanistan
Jun 26, 2008, 13:50 GMT
Kabul - Officials in the eastern Afghan province of Kunar said Thursday they have captured two of the most volatile districts from the Taliban during a military operation.
The governor of Kunar, Fazlullah Waheedi, said hundreds of Taliban had entered Shigal and Watapur districts in recent weeks.
He told reporters that tribal leaders and local residents asked the government to 'expel the terrorists' after they started implementing tough rules of the Taliban era.
Afghan police and army forces jointly moved to the two districts with air support from the US-led coalition forces in a two-day offensive, said the governor.
The operation ended on Thursday with the forcing the Taliban out of the area, he added.
The governor said they have not yet surveyed casualties of the insurgents and that the government and foreign troops also did not suffer any casualties.
The mountainous province of Kunar is one of the most precarious areas in the country, with many Taliban and Hizb-e-Islami fighters' strongholds.
